Day 3: Potlatch to Westport, WA

8/17/2013

Another 80-miler today, possibly in the rain, heading west along the Chehalis River, to Aberdeen and on to the fishing town of Westport, situated on a peninsula between Gray's Harbor and the Pacific. Westport will bring me to the Pacific Ocean for the first of many days to come.  I'm leaving early, as the morning weather report now shows no rain here until 9:00, and a window between noon and 5:00 with no rain at my destination in Westport.

No complaints first half of the day. I'm almost 40 miles in and it's only 10:30. It's overcast but comfortable and I have only caught a few drizzles so far. Nice countryside but it loses something when you can't enjoy it against the backdrop of a blue sky.  I'm in Elma now, getting some carbs for the final 40 at the Rusty Tractor.

Rough roads leaving Elma, where your best track is 6" - 16" at the edge of the road

Raining, no street signs, and no cross streets - I feel lost

I was supposed to turn here and I'm not asking the guy on the porch with the banjo for directions

Freddie: Ihopeyour are feeling better. Just got caught up this morning on your adventure. Thanks for keeping us up to date. You pulled a "Dave" as my kids would say by falling with your bike and NOT even riding it. Keep the faith!
XO,
Schmidty

Jeff, you stories really make us live the experience. I hope that you are doing well after the accident. There are nice people all over and you are definitely touched by a few along the way. Ride safe and how's the heart? I just had a calcium score to check for blockages. Turning 56 tomorrow and catching up with you....

Hey Jeff!

I am completely riveted by your tales. Our whole family is watching you with intense interest. I'm so glad you're blogging about it.

And you're in my old stomping grounds, realize. I grew up outside Seattle, and know the Sound, the Peninsula, and the Coast like the back of my hand. You're making me real home sick.

Sure sorry about the injury.

Cathy is amazing. Thanks for posting about her.

Thank you for the comments! I'm about half-way through today's long ride. Injuries giving me no trouble. Just dealing with typical, back & bum fatigue.

I'm so enjoying your pictures and posts Jeff. You are in my favorite part of the country. I spent many summers around Elma, Olympia and parts in between. Safe(er) travels for the rest of the journey!
